The 4-7-8 breath

Performing the 4-7-8 breath is a simply powerful exercise which can be accomplished anywhere, anytime, and in any comfortable or preferred position.

the 4-7-8 breath stimulates a powerful sense of relaxation throughout the mind and body; it acts as a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system.

This exercise is subtle at first, yet gains power with gradual repetition.​

Visualize it

I'm sitting upright with my legs crossed, eyes closed, and body relaxed... before i start, i rest the tip of my tongue on the ridge of tissue, right behind my upper front teeth.

i exhale all remaining air in my lungs, i then start inhaling through my nose with a relaxed and consistent flow.

after 4 seconds of inhaling, i stop the flow and proceed to hold my breath for 7 seconds.

after 7 seconds of holding my breath, i then proceed to exhale from my mouth with pressure for 8 seconds; as i am exhaling, the sound is making a whooshing noise as my lips are slightly pouted.

when i reach the end of the 8 second exhale, i repeat the cycle by inhaling through my nose for 4 seconds.

i complete this 3 more times, for a total of 4 breaths.
